A daily walking program (or as your schedule allows) inside our church building -- the program has been mapped out for participants to log miles and progress.
Walking was the centerpiece of three recent studies:
American Journal of Epidemiology followed more than 3,000 women and men, age 65 and older, for 5 1/2 years. For a lower risk of dementia, stay active. Performing or participating in at least 4 different activities each week provided the greatest benefit. The greater the varieties of activities, the less likely participants were to succumb to dementia.
Journal of American Medical Association included 2,257 men, ages 71 to 93. Men, who walked the most, at least 2 miles per day, had less than half the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease than their peers who walked less than a quarter mile daily.
Journal of American Medical Association included 16,466 women, ages 70 and older. Those who walked the equivalent of at least 1 1/2 hours per week, at a pace of at least 2 miles per hour, performed much better on cognitive tests (including memory tests) than women who walked less.
SO..............................HOW ABOUT A WALK?
